Comfort - Consolation

To the extent that we give way to our will in sinning, to that extent we set ourselves at a distance from comfort. [TBR]

If the Spirit convinces of sin, and so humbles us, it is that he may make way for his office of comforting us. [TBR]

Though Satan cannot rob a Christian of his crown, yet such is his malice, that he will therefore tempt, that he may spoil them of their comforts. [PRASD]

The soul may be full of holy affections when it is empty of divine consolations. Comfort is not of the being, but of the well-being of a Christian. [PRASD]

Though God cannot, and will not, dissolve the relationship which the Spirit of adoption has made between the Father and the sons, for any sin that such do commit: yet he can, and often does, take away from them the comfort of their adoption, not suffering children, while sinning, to have the sweet and comfortable sense thereof on their hearts. We often find more comfort in the falls and failures of great saints who repented and were forgiven and restored, than in their deeds of heroism.
