Self-examination

Multitudes perish by the hand of some secret sin, that is not only hidden from others, but from lack of observing their own hearts, is hidden even from themselves. [ASGTH]

Some content themselves with hearing the Word preached, but have no intention of examining themselves in the light of that Word. [AFTG]

Author:

We are stronger after defeats, because hidden corruption, undiscerned before, is now discovered, and thence we are brought to make use of mercy pardoning and power supporting. [TBR]

We must have two eyes, one to see the imperfections in ourselves and others, the other to see what is good. [TBR]

Thorough, impartial, frequent self-examination is not the characteristic of any who are at heart unsound. In fact the reluctance of some to this duty is sad evidence against them. It costs them too much.  [JJTP]

It would be a good contest amongst Christians, one to labour to give no offence, and the other to labour to take none. The best men are severe to themselves, tender over others.  [TBR]

Sometimes victory is suspended because some Achan is not found out, or because we are not humble enough.  [TBR]

A declining spiritual state and solid spiritual peace cannot exist together. So by the lack of spiritual joy and peace you may know your true condition. [TGOC]

Author:

Our whole life is beset with temptations. Satan watches all opportunities to break our peace, to wound our consciences, to lessen our comforts, to impair our graces, to slur our evidences, and to damp our assurances. Oh! What need then have we to be always upon our watch-tower, lest we be surprised by this subtle serpent.  Watchfulness includes a waking, a rousing up of the soul. It is a continual, careful observing of our hearts and ways, in all the turnings of our lives, that we still keep close to God and his Word. [PRASD]

A full and thorough conviction that we are sinners is both right and useful. A vague and general suspicion of guilt will hardly lead any one to embrace the gospel. [ROOS]
